Couples Retreat: Critical Reviews

Comedy had potential and good cast, but it is only in the promise

Couples Retreat (Couples Retreat, 2009) had the potential to be a great comedy about the difficulty of maintaining a good marriage after a few summers have passed since the expected "yes".

To tell the story, actor Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau and his friend screenwriter Dana Fox elencaram four types of couples quite distinct. The first one shows a workaholic Vaughn leaving little room for his wife (Malin Akerman, Watchmen), who wants more attention. The second is formed by the former captain of the football team (Favreau) and ex-cheerleader (Kristin Davis, Fri and the City), who became pregnant on the day of the prom. The third couple is no longer together, because Shane (Faizon Love) just take a foot-in-ass and now walks up and down with a girl who is half his age (Kali Hawk). And trying to keep their relationship are Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell). The two can not get pregnant and this is bringing up the other marital problems.

The solution: go to a resort that specializes in couples therapy.
The problem: they're on a budget and will only be able to travel if they close a package in which the eight heavenly place to embark.
The catch: to get there, even couples who thought they were going to just enjoy the holidays will be subjected to conversations with psychologists, yoga exercises and life lessons given by the creator of the site (Jean Reno).
Cheap moral lessons, attempts scenes of shame that others do not turn out as they should and only sexual innuendos are very little and does not do justice to the scene where the film settles down (Bora Bora, in case you wondered). And you can not even tell that they were only there because some local hotel decided to play because at no time did they say where is this island waters so clear.

Looks like Couples Retreat is just a plan to use money from the studio and go on holiday with all expenses paid while pretending that it is working. Only way to explain how such artificial situations and characters were caricatured as far as to tell a romantic comedy so dull. And so what could be a hit of the afternoon session saw a monkey off the shelves of stores.

Comédia tinha potencial e bom elenco, mas fica só na promessa

Encontro de Casais (Couples Retreat, 2009) tinha potencial para ser uma ótima comédia sobre a dificuldade de manter um bom casamento depois que algumas primaveras já se passaram desde o esperado "sim".

Para contar a história, o ator Vince Vaughn, seu amigoJon Favreau e a roteirista Dana Fox elencaram quatro tipos de casais bem distintos entre si. O primeiro deles mostra um workaholic Vaughn deixando pouco espaço para a sua esposa (Malin Akerman, de Watchmen), que quer mais atenção. O segundo é formado pelo ex-capitão do time de futebol americano (Favreau) e a ex-cheerleader (Kristin Davis, de Sex and the City), que engravidou no dia do baile de formatura. O terceiro casal já não está mais junto, pois Shane (Faizon Love) acabou de levar um pé-na-bunda e agora anda para cima e para baixo com uma menina que tem a metade de sua idade (Kali Hawk). E tentando manter seu relacionamento estão Jason (Jason Bateman) e Cynthia (Kristen Bell). Os dois não conseguem engravidar e isso está trazendo à tona os demais problemas conjugais.

• A solução: partir para um resort especializado em terapia de casal.
• O problema: eles estão com o dinheiro contado e só vão conseguir viajar se fecharem um pacote em que os oito embarcam ao paradisíaco local.
• O porém: ao chegar lá, até mesmo os casais que achavam que iam apenas aproveitar as férias vai ser submetido a conversas com psicólogos, exercícios de yoga e lições de vida proferidas pelo idealizador do local (Jean Reno).

Lições baratas de moral, tentativas de cenas de vergonha alheia que não se concretizam como deveriam e apenas insinuações sexuais são muito pouco e não faz jus ao cenário onde o filme se ambienta (Bora Bora, caso você queria saber). E nem dá para dizer que eles só foram para lá porque algum hotel local resolveu bancar, pois em momento algum se diz onde fica a tal ilha de águas tão límpidas.

Parece que Encontro de Casais é apenas um plano para usar o dinheiro do estúdio e ir passar férias com tudo pago enquanto se finge que está trabalhando. Só assim para explicar como situações tão artificiais e personagens tão caricatos foram tão longe para contar uma comédia-romântica tão sem-graça. E assim o que poderia ser um hitda sessão da tarde vira um mico das prateleiras de locadoras.

Dave (Vince Vaughn), um negociante de Guitar Hero, e Ronnie (Malin Akerman), uma dona-de-casa, são um típico casal com dois meninos. Eles enfrentam vários problemas incluindo redecorar sua casa e criar seus filhos. Joey (Jon Favreau) e Lucy (Kristin Davis) são namorados desde o ensino médio com uma tipica filha adoslecente rebelde chamada Lacey. O relacionamento deles é sobre as rochas. Jason (Jason Bateman) e Cynthia (Kristen Bell) são um casal neurótico que já experimentou várias tentativas fracassadas de ter um filho, e Shane (Faizon Love), que recentemente separado de sua esposa, tem uma namorada bem mais jovem 20 anos , Trudy (Kali Hawk).

Como um último esforço, eles encontraram um resort de terapia de casais chamada Eden. Um negócio chamado o pacote Pelicano é metade do custo normal se pode obter três outros casais a se juntar a eles. Em sua apresentação, eles mostram belas imagens de praias ensolaradas e locais bonitos. Também asseguram aos outros que a terapia de casais é puramente opcional.

Dave e Ronnie discutem a sua incapacidade de ir por causa das responsabilidades com as crianças e recusam a viagem. No meio da noite, o alarme de segurança casa é ativado quando Jason aparece inesperadamente para continuar a vender a idéia do retiro. A baderna acorda as crianças, que escutam a conversa de seus pais de não serem capazes de ir por causa deles. Temendo que seus pais estão contemplando o divórcio, as crianças arranjam o pai de Dave, vovô Jim-Jim (interpretado por Vince Vaughn pai na vida real, Vernon Vaughn) para tomar conta deles e assim, seus pais possam ir ao Éden.

O resort prova a ser dividido em Éden Ocidente e Oriente Éden. A oeste é para casais e usa o slogan "Stay Together". Oriente é para solteiros e usa o slogan "Come Together". Oriente e Ocidente participantes não estão autorizados a se misturam.

À chegada ao Éden Ocidente, os quatro casais são mostradas suas moradias. No jantar, Sctanley [sic] (pronuncia-se "Stanley"), o anfitrião resort (Peter Serafinowicz), informa que terapia de casais, que começa às 06:00, é realmente obrigatório. Se qualquer casal não comparecer, será tomado como uma indicação de que eles querem sair, e um reembolso para o Éden será dado, embora não para a sua passagem aérea. Os grupos discutem o que fazer. Depois de um jantar relaxante com muitas iguarias, eles decidem colocar-se com "um par de horas" da terapia, a fim de desfrutar das comodidades do resort outros.

Na parte da manhã, cada casal encontra-se com um terapeuta atribuído. Todos os quatro casais descobrem que têm problemas, mesmo Ronnie e Dave, que achava que eles estavam bem. Eles suportam (Jean Reno) resort proprietário Marcel com seus métodos incomuns, incluindo natação e alimentação com tubarões-limão e sessões de ioga com instrutor amoroso Salvadore (Carlos Ponce).

Na quarta noite, Trudy foge ao Éden Leste. Os outros sete, incentivado por Joey, que está insatisfeito com seu casamento, saia para encontrá-la. Após uma discussão entre Cynthia e Jason, os homens e mulheres se separaram. Enquanto tentam encontrar o caminho para o resort, os homens acabam discutindo e apontar os erros dos outros casamentos.

As mulheres correm em Salvadore que os leva ao Éden Leste. Os homens vêm do outro lado da sala, onde eles encontram funcionários Sctanley jogando Guitar Hero. Ele ameaça denunciar los para Marcel, mas Dave desafia-o para o jogo (sem contar Sctanley que ele está envolvido na produção do jogo). Sctanley, depois de ter perdido a aposta, direciona-los ao Éden Leste, mesmo que ele sabe que foi enganado por Dave.

Quando eles chegam, Dave percebe uma coisa boa que ele tem com Ronnie. Ele vai com ela para ficar sozinho em uma cachoeira. Joey encontra Lucy com Salvadore e o derruba para fora, reunindo-se com sua esposa. Cynthia e Jason começam a beber e acabam se tornando íntimos. Shane corre para sua ex-mulher, que admite que ela ainda o ama. Shane diz Trudy permanecer no Éden Leste e gosta de ser solteira, então sai com sua ex-esposa. Todos os quatro casais voltam ao Éden Ocidente.

Marcel decide, já que os casais têm trabalhado os seus problemas, os livra da terapia e que lhes permite praticar jet ski, e com isso, realmente desfrutar o resto de suas férias.

Couples Retreat: Plot

Dave (Vince Vaughn), a dealer for Guitar Hero, and Ronnie (Malin Åkerman), a stay-at-home mom, are a typical couple with two young boys. They experience various stresses including redecorating their house and raising their sons. Joey (Jon Favreau) and Lucy (Kristin Davis) are high school sweethearts with a typical rebellious teenage daughter named Lacey. Their relationship is on the rocks. Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) are a neurotic couple who've experienced multiple failed attempts to conceive, and Shane (Faizon Love), who has recently separated from his wife, has a much younger twenty-year-old girlfriend, Trudy (Kali Hawk).

At Dave's son's birthday party, Jason and Cynthia, using PowerPoint, announce their troubled marriage and that they are considering divorce because they cannot have a baby. As a last-ditch effort, they have found a couples therapy resort named Eden. A deal called the Pelican Package is half the normal cost if they can get three other couples to join them. In their presentation, they show beautiful pictures of sunlit beaches and beautiful locations. They also assure the others that the couples therapy is purely optional.

Dave and Ronnie discuss their inability to go because of childcare responsibilities and decline the trip. In the middle of the night, their home security alarm is activated when Jason shows up unexpectedly to further sell the idea of the retreat. The commotion wakes the kids, who have overheard their parents' conversations of not being able to go because of them. Fearing that their parents are contemplating divorce, the kids have already arranged for Dave's father, Grandpa Jim-Jim (played by Vince Vaughn's real-life father, Vernon Vaughn) to babysit so their parents can go to Eden.

The retreat proves to be divided into Eden West and Eden East. West is for couples and uses the tagline "Stay Together". East is for singles and uses the tagline "Come Together". East and West attendees are not allowed to intermingle.

Upon arrival at Eden West, the four couples are shown their villas. At dinner, Sctanley (pronounced "Stanley"), the resort host (Peter Serafinowicz), informs them that couples therapy, which starts at 6 a.m., is actually mandatory. If any couple fails to attend, it will be taken as an indication that they want to leave, and a refund for Eden will be given, although not for their airfare. The group debates what to do. After an indulgent dinner with many delicacies, they decide to put up with "a couple of hours" of therapy in order to enjoy the other amenities of the resort.

In the morning, each couple meets with an assigned therapist. All four couples learn that they have problems, even Ronnie and Dave, who thought they were fine. They endure resort owner Marcel's (Jean Reno) unusual methods, including swimming with and feedinglemon sharks and yoga sessions with amorous instructor Salvadore (Carlos Ponce).

On the fourth night, Trudy escapes to Eden East. The other seven, encouraged by Joey who is unsatisfied with his marriage, leave to find her. Following an argument between Cynthia and Jason, the men and women split up. As they try to find their way to the resort, the men end up arguing and pointing out each others' marriage mistakes.

The women run into Salvadore who takes them to Eden East. The men come across the staff lounge where they find Sctanley playing Guitar Hero. He threatens to report them to Marcel, but Dave challenges him to the game (without telling Sctanley that he is involved in the game's production). Sctanley, after having lost the wager, directs them to Eden East, even though he knows he was tricked by Dave.

When they arrive, Dave realizes what a good thing he has with Ronnie. He goes with her to be alone at a waterfall. Joey finds Lucy with Salvadore and knocks him out, reuniting with his wife. Cynthia and Jason share drinks and end up becoming intimate. Shane runs into his ex-wife, who admits she still loves him. Shane tells Trudy to remain in Eden East and enjoy being single, then leaves with his ex-wife. All four couples return to Eden West.

Marcel, seeing that the couples have worked out their problems, frees them from the therapy and allows them to go jet skiing, and with that, really enjoy the rest of their vacation.

A door shut in my heart...

Well, my plans were to post about everybody (or least the most) of the episodes of Awkward, talking about what happens in each of them, but i'm too lazy. So I'll summarize the entire season (ok i'll try).

As every tv show or american movie about teenagers in a school, obviously will have a drama, and with Awkward. isn't different. A love triangle. The third of the play, who falls in love with Jenna is simply Matty's best friend, Jake.
And unlike Matty, he has not ashamed to be seen with Jenna, the suicidal girl.


Come on, pros and cons about Jake:

Pros: Jake is so sweet, and he has not ashamed to walk or want to date with Jenna. And she's totally in love with him, this is very obvious! He's a gentleman, funny, and all that is good (unlike Matty).
Cons: He has a girlfriend. There are more cons, but you know, I'm Team Jake.

Well, Jenna doesn't know whether she is or not with Matty, because they not have had a DTR (Define the Relationship) yet. And Jake thinks Jenna likes him.
Jake kisses Jenna (purposely), blah blah blah, she thinks it was an accident and ignores, blah blah blah, he says he likes her (that's right Jake) and invites her to the prom (yay!!!!!). But she doesn't accept saying it already has pair (ie, Matty). Jake gets very sad (don't cry Jake).

But some interventions of cosmo and Jenna sees that Jake is right, then she breaks up (not sure if this would be the right term, 'cause they were never actually together, so lol) with Matty and agreed to go to prom with Jake.
Uh, little problems. Matty had planned to invite Jenna in a romantic style to go to the prom and make their relationship public.

Matty goes to the prom. And Jenna with Jake there (omg!!). And he says some indirects to her like 'She came with another guy, do you think i still have a chance with her?' (Not in those words) because Jake was on the side and he could not tell who was the girl.
And she says no, that "the girl" probably not like him.

So I think that's it. I'm sorry if I mixed a little of season 2, sometimes I do it.

Oh!! The letter that Jenna received at the beginning of the season was written by her MOTHER. What really helped Jenna (despite hurt her too) but Jenna should give a discount to mother.


For this rest of week I'll post comments about the tv show, interviews and on the actors, then, as the blog is a work of English (cool huh?). Each week I have a theme and have to find a movie or a tv show with the theme. Then, I'll talk about Awkward only this week (until friday). Uma porta no meu coração se fechou...

Bom, meus planos eram postar sobre todos (ou pelo menos a maioria) dos episódio da série Awkward. falando o que acontece em cada, mas a preguiça falou mais alto. Então vou resumir a temporada inteira (ou tentar.)

Como toda série ou filme americano sobre adolescentes em uma escola tem que ter o drama básico que é um triangulo amoroso. O terceiro da jogada, que se apaixona por Jenna é, simplesmente, o melhor amigo de Matty, Jake.
E diferente de Matty, esse não tem vergonha que o vejam com Jenna, a garota suicida.

Vamos aos prós e contras sobre Jake:

Prós: Jake é um fofo, não se envergonha por andar ou querer namorar Jenna, esta totalmente apaixonada e fica bem obvio isso (diferente de Matty), é um cavalheiro, engraçado, e tudo que há de bom.
Contras: Ele tem namorada. Não há mais contras, e sim, eu sou Team Jake.

Bom, Jenna não sabe se está ou não com Matty, já que eles ainda não tiveram um D.A.R (Definir a Relação) e Jake acha que Jenna está na dele.

Jake beija Jenna (propositalmente) blá blá blá, ela acha que foi sem querer e ignora, blá blá blá, ele diz que gosta dela (Isso ai Jake) e convida ela para o baile (~uhules, dancinha, uhules~) porem ela nega dizendo que já tem par (Ou seja, o frouxo do Matty). Jake fica muito triste (Não chore Jake, você consegue melhor).

Acontece umas intervenções do cosmo e Jenna vê que o certo é o Jake, então vai lá e ''termina'' (não sei se esse seria o termo certo já que nem estavam juntos realmente) com Matty e aceita ir ao baile com Jake.

Uuuuuh, probleminhas. Matty tinha planejado convidar Jenna em um estilo meio romântico pra ir ao baile e tornar a relação deles publica.

Bobeiou, danço, Matty McKibben.

Matty vai atras de Jenna no baile (Ela, obvio, esta com Jake lá) e joga umas indiretas pra ela do tipo: "Ela veio com outro cara, você acha que ainda tenho chances com ela?" (Não com essas palavras) já que Jake estava do lado e ele não podia falar quem era a garota.
E ela diz que não, que "a garota" provavelmente não estava mais na dele. Peninha por você Matty )):

Então que eu me lembre acho que termina assim a primeira temporada e me desculpem se misturei um pouquinho da segunda, as vezes faço isso ):


Ah, e quase ia me esquecendo. A carta que Jenna recebeu no começo da temporada foi escrita pela MÃE dela. Ok, ela foi meio cruel, mas aquilo ajudou bastante Jenna (apesar de ter magoado ela também) mas Jenna devia dar um desconto pra mãe ):

Bom, essa foi a primeira temporada.

Durando o resto da semana postarei comentários sobre a série, entrevistas e sobre os atores, então, como o blog é um trabalho de inglês (Legal né?) cada semana eu tenho um tema e tenho que achar um filme ou uma série com o tema, então falarei sobre Awkward. somente essa semana (até sexta feira) então se quiserem que eu fale sobre a segunda temporada avisem e eu dou um jeito de falar um pouco sobre ela essa semana ;)

Uma amiga bem legal que vai falar onde vocês podem ver a primeira e segunda temporada de Akward. online ;)

Girl excluded that suffers at the hands of hot blonde and popular because both want the hunky football player? Not a chance.

handsome face? Checks.
Blonde villainess, delicious and popular? X

In awkard. the villain is the cheerleader (typical) overweight (okay, she's not overweight, but I think it was supposed to be more or less) and that is only a cheerleader because her family is filthy rich. Sandie being rich, popular cheerleader and takes to commit bullying those who were lucky to be skinny.

And if you think Jenna (the girl deleted) gets the entire season trying to get the hunky (Matty) are wrong. Right from the first, the pilot episode, he already gets it and in the second scene are already having sex. Ok, a little faster, but that's it.
Pity that Matty just wanted it after the girl called him to go with her orientation he refuses, saying that what goes between them has to be kept secret.

A friend?

Still in the pilot episode, Jenna receives a letter from "A friend." Who will? Does this "friend" is helping or just making fun of Jenna's face? Whoever this person was very sincere.

After reading the letter Jenna tries to kill himself. Oops, wrong. An accident happens in the bathroom and the girl as she is suicidal. She always wanted to be noticed, now she is. Too bad I would not like.

Garota excluída que sofre nas mãos da loira gostosa e popular porque as duas querem o jogador de futebol bonitão? Nem pensar.

Garota excluída? Confere.
Cara bonitão? Confere.

Vilã loira, gostosa e popular? X

Em Awkard. a vilã é a líder de torcida (tipico) obesa (tá, ela não é obesa, mas acho que era pra ser mais ou menos isso) e que só é líder de torcida porque sua familia é podre de rica. Sandie sendo rica, popular e líder de torcida aproveita para cometer bullying com os que tiveram a sorte de serem magros. 

E se pensam que Jenna (a garota excluída) fica a temporada inteira tentando conseguir o bonitão (Matty) estão errados.  Logo de primeira, no episodio piloto, ele ja chega nela e na segunda cena já estão fazendo sexo. Ok, um pouco rápido, mas é isso mesmo.

Pena que Matty só queria isso, após a garota chama-lo para ir com ela na orientação ele recusa, dizendo que o que rola entre eles tem que ficar em segredo.

Ainda no episódio piloto, Jenna recebe uma carta de "Um amigo". Quem será? Será que este "Amigo"  esta ajudando ou apenas zombando da cara de Jenna? Seja quem for, essa pessoa foi bem sincera. 

Depois de ler a carta Jenna tenta se matar. Ops, errado. Acontece um acidente no banheiro e ela fica como a garota suicida. Ela sempre quis ser notada, agora ela é. Pena que não como gostaria.
